Boccia is a dynamic and inclusive Paralympic sport designed specifically for people with physical disabilities. It offers everything, from those seeking elite international competition to individuals simply wanting a social, fun way to stay active and connected.
Unlike many other wheelchair sports such as basketball, football, or hockey, Boccia doesn’t share a direct connection. Instead, it’s more similar to lawn bowls or the Italian game bocce — though Boccia is played indoors with soft leather balls. Players throw, kick, or use a ramp to propel the ball, depending on their physical abilities.
Boccia is open to people of all ages and experience levels. Whether you’re looking to play casually, join a local club, or work your way up through the competitive ranks, Boccia offers a clear development pathway. Players can compete at the local, state, national, and even international level, including at World Championships and the Paralympic Games.
Beyond the court, Boccia fosters community, personal growth, and independence. It provides opportunities to meet new people, travel, and develop life skills — both for players and those supporting the sport.
But you don’t need to be a competitive athlete to be involved. Boccia offers a range of ways to take part — as a player, sports assistant, ramp operator, coach, referee, or volunteer.
Programs are running in every state so visit https://www.boccia.com.au/get-involved/find-a-club/ or email: admin@boccia.com.au to find your nearest club or learn how to get started.
