Why are you completing The Squat Challenge?
FSHD has been a disease I have battled with since I was 17. It has taken a lot from me, not only from my body but also my confidence. Participating in this challenge last year allowed me to let a lot of people in my life know about my disease and how it affects me. The support was amazing and it has made me more comfortable talking about my FSHD. The Muscles for Muscles squat challenge not only raises money for research into this disease but it also helps to raise awareness. So many people had no idea about this disease before I did the challenge last year, so it is a great initiative to get conversations happening.
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am a 37 from Perth, WA. I have been married for 12 years and have 2 children. Hudson is 9 and Georgia is 7. I love sport and being active. I attend Hillside Crossfit every week and absolutely love it. I have to modify some movements due to my disease, but it doesn’t stop me from joining in with the workouts.
What is your occupation?
I work at a local high school for the Clontarf Foundation. We work with Indigenous High School boys as mentors to keep them in school and gain employment once they finish school. It’s very rewarding.
What’s your favourite squat exercise and why?
Back Squats because I can load the weight up!
